Newsletter: N.E. Physical Therapy Plus Now Provides Treatment For Diabetes

PHYSICAL THERAPY CLINIC NOW PROVIDES TREATMENT FOR DIABETES

N.E. Physical Therapy Plus is now offering a Joslin-certified exercise program to treat Type 2 Diabetes.

Boston, MA, February 11th, 2008 – New England Physical Therapy Plus, Inc., a network of 7 physical therapy clinics in the Greater Boston Area, announced today that its Malden location is now a certified provider of the Joslin Diabetic Exercise Program. The program was developed and tested by the JoslinDiabetesCenter, the world’s largest diabetes research site and an affiliate of HarvardMedicalSchool.

“Exercise is a core element of any diabetes treatment plan, but a common problem is that most people with diabetes lack the skilled assistance of therapists who are trained to understand the needs of the disease” says Carol Pietromonaco, Clinic Manager of N.E. Physical Therapy Plus, Quincy location.

Experts say that, while a physician’s treatment is always an essential factor in management of diabetes, the one-on-one care and supervision given by a physical therapist is an essential supplement to care for patients with diabetes. Regular visits to a physical therapist provide the supervision and ongoing advice that diabetes patients need to keep their physical activity level in check. “While diabetes educators would never let patients leave their office without being able to demonstrate that they can use a blood glucose meter or safely inject insulin, patients rarely have the opportunity to be supervised when learning how to perform the exercise prescription”, according to Catherine A. Mullooly, MS, contributing writer for the American Diabetes Association’s Diabetes Journals.

The American Diabetes Association says that people with type 2 diabetes can manage their blood glucose by following a healthy diet and exercise program, losing excess weight, and taking oral medication. Specifically, the < st1:city st="on">ADA states that diabetes patients should perform at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity per week and perform resistance training 3 times per week unless there are contraindications.

Russ Cullen, President and co-owner of N.E. Physical Therapy Plus, has future plans for the new diabetes treatment program. “We are encouraging endocrinologists and primary care physicians to ask their patients to try the program in our Malden location. Once the diabetes exercise program is increasingly utilized by the local community, we can begin expanding it to our other 6 clinic locations.” Russ is hoping to accomplish this expansion by the end of the year.

N.E. Physical Therapy Plus is a network of professional outpatient orthopedic clinics in 7 prominent Boston Area locations. The therapists offer services to those in need of rehabilitative therapy due to injuries related to sports, medical conditions, and accidents.
